Ruyn

What is it?

Ruyn is a minimalist and super lightweight boomer shooter based on the awesome Anarch by drummyfish.

The executable clocks in at 66 KB, and each level is under 5 KB uncompressed and around 500 bytes compressed, but the game still packs a punch.

The download comes with a 3D and 2D level editor and launcher/uploader, allowing you to download additional level packs and even upload your own. I've also included level-scoped online leaderboards for the more competitive players. 

My original motivation for this project was to create a level editor for Anarch, but after modifying and playing around with the source code, I think it's morphed into something that, hopefully, stands on its own.

How do I play it?

The basic premise is to kill all the enemies in a level and then find the exit. If you're aiming for a high score, it's all about your combo. After killing an enemy, you'll notice a bar at the top of the screen that quickly depletes. Kill another enemy or collect a gem before the bar depletes to increase your multiplier. Keep your multiplier up for the highest score. You also get a time bonus for finishing the level quickly. Note: Ammo is shared over multiple weapons. When you collect some shells, you have access to the shotgun and double barrel shotgun straight away. This works the same for the plasma which is shared across the plasma rifle and trident.

Tip: Use the single-barrel shotgun when you need something that fires fast and the double-barrel shotgun when you need more grunt. This can help when you're trying to keep up a combo.

I'm currently working on an HD version of Ruyn in Unreal 5, which will modernise the game in many different ways. I'll post updates here when it's done.
